Wellington Confirmed For Hobbit World Premier

Sir Peter Jackson has confirmed that Wellington will host the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in November 2012.

Jackson and Prime Minister John Key announced the decision at the Hobbiton set in the Waikato today.

Film crew are in their first week of filming on location at Hobbiton near Matamata and will spend the next seven weeks filming there and at other locations around the country.

Wellington also hosted the world premiere of the final Lord of the Rings movie, Return of the King in December 2003.

The Hobbit has faced a few hurdles in its production, including director Sir Peter Jackson's extended hospital stay for a perforated ulcer, the departure of original director Guillermo del Toro and a threatened actors' boycott.

At today's news conference it was also revealed the Hobbiton set at Matamata would remain as tourist attraction now shooting has finished.
