Production Logistics

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian © Disney Enterprises Inc & Walden Media LLC | Photo Credit : Phil Bray Production logistics throughout New Zealand are remarkably easy. As New Zealand's international traffic hub, Auckland has had to establish a comprehensive supply network. The result is that many local suppliers are geared specifically to the film industry and are experienced in handling the exacting demands of producers and production crews.

Accommodation

The proximity of film locations and facilities to Auckland central makes city-dwelling for production crews entirely feasible. Accommodation in the City Centre is internationally renowned - the Auckland Hilton was recently voted one of the ten best hotels in the world by Conde Nast magazines.

Accommodation is available to meet all budgets from motels, to serviced apartments to five star luxury hotels.

Further afield accommodation is still of a high standard with many 'rural' townships offering boutique hotel arrangements. Some crews prefer to base themselves out of the city centre.

Contact us to discuss your needs.

Telecommunications

Auckland's telecommunications infrastructure provides fast, secure broadband connections between post-production companies and their clients. Telecom and Gen-i offer a full range of landline, mobile [CDMA] and internet connections, including broadband. In addition Vodafone operates its GSM network. Cell phone coverage is extensive throughout most of the country and particularly in the Auckland region. Next generation cell phones are already extending the remote office concept for crew and production teams with high-speed wireless connections readily available.

Utilities

New Zealand operates 240 volt power. Output plugs are easily adapted for international appliances and voltage converters are readily available.

Most modern laptops run on multi power systems that will operate in New Zealand without the need for modification.

  • Unit or base camp generators are 3 phase and available in the following sizes:
  • 5 kva
  • 15kva
  • 25kva
  • 75kva

Certain locations in the CBD can also provide 3 phase power from the mains. Water supply for rain-machines is available throughout the CBD and suburbs. Water tankers are also commonly hired for film shoots.

Banking

New Zealand has a modern, easy to use banking system that is simpler, in fact than many other systems around the world. You can set up accounts and liaise with bank staff experienced in dealing with the needs of the film industry.

Line producers are familiar with foreign exchange and insuring with forward over.

Getting there By Air

Auckland is serviced by the country's largest international airport. It handles 8 million passengers from around the globe each year flying in on one of 45 airlines. Based in Mangere to the south, Auckland International Airport is 35 km (21 miles) or 20 minutes from the city centre. There are several flights daily to and from the US, UK, Asia and Australia.

Transportation

Limestone RoadThere are many car rental companies available in Auckland, several of whom focus on the film production vehicle market. International rental companies are well represented in New Zealand. They compete with smaller, local operations and rent everything from top of the range luxury cars to budget and transport vehicles.

Tracking vehicles, camera vans and makeup/wardrobe trucks are readily available for hire. So too, are the Winnebagos and motor homes needed on set.

Helicopters and light aircraft tours can provide a birds-eye view of the region. Flights are easy to arrange with experienced pilots and are perfect for locations scouting above the beaches, islands and forests of outside Auckland central.

Couriers

International couriers such as DHL, Fedex, TNT, UPS operate to and from Auckland. New Zealand based Extreme couriers also provide a specialist door-to-door National and International service, tailored to the special needs of film makers. There are numerous domestic courier companies providing same-day and overnight services within New Zealand.
